Nintendo 3DS ROMs: Just when you thought you've seen everything that the Nintendo 3DS has to offer, the company decided to push their handheld into uncharted territory by releasing a huge collection of custom ROMs — in Japan only. But what is a ROM and how will it change your gaming experience? The short answer is that a 3DS daily generated update serves as an update for the console's operating system before installing it onto the console's internal cartridge. This ensures that each record in its database can be backed up when needed or if a hardware error occurs which renders part of its memory inaccessible. Just like DLNA, the 3DS is able to download its update file onto a PC or Mac via USB and copy it onto the console itself. But with technology running so fast, maintaining the back-up of the database's records would be hard work. So why not use an alternative method of storing this information? As of January 2013, ROMs are no longer optional for all Nintendo 3DS users. Whether the selected handheld is the original DS or 3DS model, all models will have access to ROMs that are available on the site's database. While most ROMs are easy to find and access, some of the vintage Nintendo consoles have a hard time loading them up. These include Pokémon, Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. But most games from the late 80s and early 90s have been tested for functionality on both models of handhelds. However, it doesn't mean that all games will work with the 3DS. So until this issue is fully resolved by Nintendo, all other games will automatically revert to working on the original DS. It should be noted that if you're not interested in ROMs or are having problems accessing them, there are other website features which don't require their installation to function properly. There are plenty of other 3DS ROMs which you can install onto the 3DS’s internal memory. However, unlike Nintendo’s system update, these ones contain game files for several different gaming systems including the Game Boy Advance (GBA), Game Boy Color (GBC), and Game Boy (GB). Like other handheld consoles, the 3DS is able to load any game file that you put into its internal memory. However, unlike Sony's handheld console lineup, the 3DS is unable to play games that were coded for Sega's Master System 2 or Sega Genesis/Mega Drive systems due to a lack of hardware compatibility. While there is no set date for these 3-in-1 titles to be released, the developers of such titles have been promising Nintendo fans that they will deliver them in due time. Recently, Atlus announced that they would release a series of 3DS titles in the near future. Atlus has released several games for Nintendo's handheld console and its handheld console following it: "Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor" and "Persona 2: Innocent Sin" were both released in 2007; "Everyday Life with Monster Girls", "Megami Ibunroku Persona", and "Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth" were released in 2011; and "" was released in 2014.
